Our finest generation is quickly leaving us to go to a
well-deserved rest. They survived the Great Depression, fought and survived World War II, built
our economy and continue to stay active working for justice and peace. These men and women built a
strong foundation for our society enabling us to enjoy the highest standard of living of any country in
the world. One man describes for us the struggles, obstacles and victories of living through these
times.
In his book, Howard Wiseman describes in vivid detail growing up in the 20s
and 30s after a suspicious fire destroyed his home at a time when food, work,
clothing and conveniences were scarce or non-existent. He takes us up to
the war years and shows the realities of boot camp training, transfer to England
and the invasion of Normandy. Then he guides us through mud and hedgerows
to the liberation of Paris and the Battle of the Bulge.
"When the intent of one group is to shoot and kill another just for the
goal of gaining a foothold in another country, then we can say war is hell.
There are no words to describe what its like to walk over or around dead
enemies or our
own dead soldiers just to get to shelter."
At the end of the war, Wiseman outlines his struggles to get treatment for
his wounds and find employment. As a civilian Naval investigator, Wiseman shows us the realities
of life in the 50s and 60s as he investigates murders, sabotage and other crimes. Even in retirement,
Wiseman continues his efforts to pursue liberty and justice working to help
disabled veterans receive the services they deserve.
